When you meet someone for the first time, what is the first thing you notice? For many people, the answer is a bright smile. However, for celebrities who spend most of their lives in the spotlight, a smile is more than just a first impression. Celebrity smiles attract audiences, market talent, and leave a lasting impression on the red carpet. Although these paparazzi-perfect grins may seem effortless, many stars have undergone cosmetic dental procedures to enhance their natural teeth. Some of the most popular cosmetic treatments include teeth whitening, veneers, Invisalign, gum contouring, and grills.

1. Teeth Whitening

Whitening is a minimally invasive option that removes stains and discoloration to quickly brighten a smile. Professional whitening treatments are much more intense than over-the-counter at-home kits. These treatments often include laser whitening, which involves applying a bleaching solution to the teeth, which dentists then activate with a laser. This procedure can cost up to $1000, but the patient also receives immediate results. Other options include custom-fitted whitening trays that patients can use outside of the office with minimal gum sensitivity, as well as zoom whitening, which uses a special whitening gel activated by ultraviolet light, costing around $500.

Compared to other cosmetic procedures, whitening is a cheaper and less invasive option. However, it is not a permanent solution and requires regular maintenance. Additionally, avoiding highly pigmented foods like tea and coffee are recommended for the longest lasting results

2. Veneers

For those looking for a longer-lasting transformation, veneers can both brighten and subtly adjust the shape of a smile, though the process is slightly more extensive compared to whitening. This procedure has become increasingly popular in Hollywood, with many celebrities such as Dua Lipa, Millie Bobby Brown, and Michael B. Jordan incorporating them into their smile transformations.

Veneers are very costly, with prices ranging from $925 to $2,500 per tooth. In most cases, veneers involve fitting a thin piece of porcelain or resin over the surface of teeth to fix gaps, chips, and discoloration. The process generally takes two office visits, but with proper care, veneers can last up to fifteen years. Contrary to viral videos depicting patients with heavily shaven “shark teeth,” veneers require only minimal removal of the natural tooth’s outer surface. However, dentists still consider veneers to be a permanent cosmetic alteration, as some filing is necessary to adhere the material, and this outer layer does not grow back.

3. Invisalign

For more extensive alignment concerns, Invisalign allows celebrities to discreetly shift their teeth into a straighter smile without the obvious visual drawback of braces. The Kardashians, Charlie D’Amelio, and Serena Williams are a few big stars who have used Invisalign to subtly straighten their teeth.

Through a series of custom plastic molds, Invisalign gradually shifts teeth into a different position over time while still allowing celebrities to easily remove them for photoshoots, interviews, and at meals. Each aligner is slightly different than the last, applying a controlled force to misaligned teeth to shift them into a new position while minimizing discomfort. The entire treatment plan ranges in price from around $3,000 to $8,000.

4. Gum Contouring

Rather than directly altering their teeth, some celebrities have enhanced their smiles by reducing excess gum to create a more balanced appearance. Miley Cyrus’ dental transformation included gum contouring to remove excess gum tissue and reshape her gumline, making her smile more proportionate and lengthening the appearance of her teeth. Gum contouring is considered a minor surgical procedure during which a dentist or periodontist uses a laser or scalpel to remove and reshape the gum tissue.

Gum contouring is generally considered permanent, as gum tissue does not grow back, and it can cost between $100 and $400 per tooth. The procedure itself usually requires only local anesthetic and over-the-counter pain medications. In extreme cases, patients may need sedation and additional touch-up procedures. For most patients, however, the recovery period is only a week long.

5. Grills

Another popular display of cosmetic dentistry is the use of grills–decorative covers that are essentially jewelry for teeth. A$AP Rocky, Rihanna, and Megan Thee Stallion have all sported glamorous sets of grills that showcase their personalities and add an extra layer of glam to their smiles. In many cases, prosthodontists use lightweight titanium to craft unique pieces that match the aesthetic desires of their clients. These dental accessories are deeply rooted in cultures throughout history, and particularly in modern hip-hop movements.

6. Conclusion

Every flawless smile has more behind it than meets the eye, with cosmetic dentistry providing an extensive array of options for those looking to upgrade their smile. High-caliber celebrities have access to the best dental practitioners, allowing them to achieve a picture-perfect look. A flashy grin, however, often comes with a high price and a commitment to long-term maintenance. From whitening trays to Kanye West’s $850,000 grills, there is no limit to how unique, dramatic, and versatile a celebrity smile transformation can be. The smiles we see on

social media reflect an individual’s unique journey to a place of confidence while constantly facing the pressure of life in the public eye.
